Dining Table Buying Guide: Size, Shape and Seats
How to choose a dining table size and shape that fits your dining room and seats your family comfortably.
How many seats do you actually need?
Count your household plus the guests you host regularly, not just on festival days. A 4-seat table suits a small family or couple; 6-seat is the most common choice for Bangladeshi households; 8-seat suits larger families or those who entertain often.
Matching the table to your room
Allow about 900mm of clearance on all sides of the table for chairs to pull out and people to walk past while others are seated. A 6-seat rectangular table is typically around 1.5m x 0.9m, so the dining area needs to be roughly 3.3m x 2.7m at minimum.
Rectangular, round or extendable
- Rectangular tables seat the most people for a given room length and suit rooms that are longer than they are wide
- Round tables work well in square rooms and make conversation easier across the table
- Extendable tables stay compact day to day and open up for guests, useful if your space is limited
Table top material
Solid wood tops are the most durable and can be refinished if scratched. Wood veneer over engineered wood costs less and still looks like solid wood. A tempered glass top (Glass for Dining Table) is easy to wipe clean and pairs well with a wood or metal base.
Chairs and finishing touches
Pick Dining Chair seating with a firm cushion for meals lasting an hour or more. A Showcase or Tea Trolley & Side Board nearby keeps dinnerware within reach without cluttering the table.
